Cody's Story

My name is Cody. I am an intelligent high school graduate. I am planning to go to college for welding. I have been abused from childhood. Until I came to the Stephen Center, my father’s abuse led me to drink and smoke weed.

When I came to the Stephen Center I was treated with respect. I tried to push everyone away, but they wouldn’t give up on me. I thought I knew what was best for me. With the help of everyone at the Stephen Center, I am now planning to go to college. I am also in the process of getting my own place to live.

My father’s abuse caused me to have low self-esteem. I was taught to fight. I didn’t know how to ask for help. I tried to do it all on my own. About six months ago, I left the Stephen Center and went back home. I thought I could handle living with my dad, but we just kept fighting. I had kept in contact with my friends from the Stephen Center. They were a great support system even though I didn’t go back there immediately. I went to a rehabilitation center and then moved in with my grandmother.

While living with my grandmother, I was in contact with Gary at the shelter. I needed his support and guidance. I ask him if I could come back. They let me back in and now I am doing well. They are helping me get my life back on track. Thank you Stephen Center for all your help.
