YOUTHSERVE TO VOLUNTEER AT STEPHEN CENTER EMERGENCY SHELTER

You usually expect to see 7th and 8th graders hanging around the pool during the summer, but not those involved in YouthServe.  Ten YouthServe volunteers and their adult leaders will be helping at the Stephen Center Emergency Shelter on June 29 and 30th from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm.  Shelter Director Maggie Nocita said “We are very excited and lucky to have these young volunteers working with us.  We have so many different projects for them – some may be working out in the yard while others may be sorting through donations and keeping the pantry in order.”
“YouthServe is a three-day program offered through the Archdiocese of Omaha.  The program teaches both service and discipleship” stated Rita Ramos, Coordinator of Youth Ministry for the Archdiocese.

About Stephen Center

Stephen Center, Inc. has served the homeless and low-income men, women and children in Omaha since 1984.  Stephen Center is the only “dry” emergency shelter in Omaha, focusing on assisting those who have made a commitment to overcome the life destroying effects of drugs and alcohol.  Stephen Center operates three distinct programs:  Stephen Center Emergency Shelter, Stephen Center HERO Program and Stephen Center Transitional Living Program.

About YouthServe

YouthServe offers an integrated approach to service learning from a Catholic perspective.  A 3-day program, YouthServe is designed for teams of young adolescents going into 8th and 9th grade and their adult leaders (youth ministers, teachers, catechist parents) from Catholic parishes and schools.  The program offers youth the ability to respond to their call to serve others by combining learning with hands-on experience at local work sites.
